A little bit about me
Hi! I’m Maeven, I own and run this business. I’m a homeschooled teenager from California with a passion for crafty and artistic things. I am 17 years old as of November 2017 and I am a self-taught artist, meaning I teach myself using the internet and books.
The Story of Maevedragon Creations
If at any point in my childhood someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, the answer always was “an artist!” There was no question. I always thought running a small business and selling my own art sounded quite fun… and I actually can’t imagine myself doing anything else.
I didn’t always know I wanted to run a t-shirt business, though. For a while I thought of selling handmade items online. I’m always making crafty little things with my hands, crocheting and sewing and other stuff. So I thought, “Why not start selling this kind of stuff on Etsy? People would buy it.”
But in order to have a really successful business selling handmade items, you have to make the same or similar items over and over and over again. Some people love doing that, and I say, good for them!
Buuut… I am not one of those people.
I’ve tried it before. I can’t stand to do same thing over and over.
I need to be doing new projects all the time. I’ll get halfway through one project, get an exciting idea for a new project (ooh shiny!) and switch to that instead. Then halfway through said new project, I get ANOTHER new idea, and… yeah. If you hadn’t already guessed it, I’m ADHD.
So I gave up the idea of any kind of business where I’d have to hand-make very single product. That’s okay, that kind of business just isn’t meant for me.
Then one day I heard of t-shirt businesses, for some reason it had never occurred to me before.
Draw a design once.. print it on as many things as I want.. And I get to wear my art?? YES. I definitely want to do that!
I decided I needed a drawing tablet so that I could make digital art. Saving up for that drawing tablet took me a good part of a year. Once I got the tablet, I was faced with a new problem: How do I make digital art?!
Digital art is like a mix of drawing and painting. Up until then, I only had experience with the drawing part (I don’t have the patience waiting for paint to dry). I’ve read lots of digital painting tutorials on the internet but that doesn’t just magically give you skills. I still had to practice, learn the techniques, figure out my own art style. So I practiced and practiced. I made a lot of mistakes and half-finished drawings. (Seriously, a LOT of half-finished drawings.)
It took a few years, but eventually I got good enough that I could start creating product designs.
And Maevedragon Creations was launched mid-December of 2017!
